MONDAY, AUGUST 22, 1864. Moved out at daylight - the men much worn out and but few having time to make coffee and nothing in the bread line, moved fast all day loosing many horses and picking up all we could find many of our men who were dismounted had to foot it and keep up or be taken prisoners - they chose the former and pressed along many of them about half asleep and if we dismounted them a moment had to go round and waken them up before could start and about dusk came to our advance pickets - then you should have heard our boys Cheer and the first forces they came across - you would hear the men say have you any Hard Bread you could give me - we camped some place in front of atlanta about six miles distant nothing for men or Horses TUESDAY 23 Moved from Camp early in the morning the men being so much exhausted the could scarcely walk but after some exercise they were invigorated and moved round with ease Marched until about the middle of afternoon when reached Camp at Sandtown where we started from to Raid Round atlanta Ga WEDNESDAY 24 Men dull the morning after making a successful Raid Round Atlanta Ga a distance of 160 miles in five (5) day and five (5) nights - and fighting the enemy most of the time loosing - had two men wounded in Co. "A" and three (3) missing Co. "C" in my squadron had three (3) Killed Cut all the Rail Roads Round the City.
