THURSDAY, SEPTEMBER 1 In General Logans fortifications up early - Horse gone- found tied up. Tail cut off to disfigure her - Rebs charged on fortifications but failed. found our Command and but few missing. although the fell back fast and in almost a panick [?] the Rebs. had got my saddle, having exchanged with Jno McCloud temporarily. he had his horse killed and he fell into the hands of the Rebs. Our Command cheered when I brought in my small squad of six - having reported me Captured moved round on the Right flank of our army and held the Rebs Left about sundown our Infantry relieved us and charged [them?] out of Jonesboro. All my Co. went on Picket. some firing during night (Vertically, over entry:-) Horses plenty to eat but suffer for water. we have only had our horses unsaddled for a few moments at a time since commencing this move and our horses have very sore Backs.  FRIDAY 2 Relieved my pickets at daylight and had to move out almost before we got Breakfast (Killed a fine hog) moved out fast to a point five miles from Rail Road and about south.west of Lovejoy Station where we met the Rebel cav about noon. across Flint River one Brig. crossed and threw up barricades. the Rebs. charged these three times but were repulsed. they Planted one piece and threw several shells close to us. our guns soon silenced them. We had several men severely wounded. we were (my squadron) left on duty until late at night. some person neglecting to do his duty Lay down and slept all the time I could having thediarrhoea from eating fresh Pork.
