Oct 18th at 7 A M march take the Dirt Town road to Treadways Gap. then turn to the right through the gap (1 1/2 mile through) towards Summersville & camp within four miles of town, the rebs destroyed the road as they passed through the gap our men soon repair it we pass through a rich tract of Country pass several fine dwelling houses we counted 37 niggers at one house they were all shades from pale yellow to ebony black. distance marched about 20 miles
