just day light march to river & get our breakfast then form a line around town (both endsresting on the river) & build works around 2 P M the enemy appear in our front they mass their forces & at 5 P M they come down upon us we hold our works by hard fighting, the rebs lost 5000 or 6000 killed & wounded & 1000 or 1500 prisoners our loss about 500 I recd a slight wound while going after cartridges
