Decem 1st about 1 A M we commenced falling back across the river when all across we fired the bridge & just before day light [we?] started for Nashville after had left we heard very heavy cannonading suppose it to be our men shelling the rebs across the river about noon we halt for breakfast within 1 mile of Nashville lay here 2 hours there march into town the citizens Show much [???rity] thousands of them have turned out to work on fortifications we take
