they went for them & our regt had the pleasure of taking between two & three hundred prisoners from behind a stone wall, we had our flag staff shot in two the bullet-cutting the color Sergeants finger off, we captured every piece of artilery the enemy opened on us & drove them (the enemy) in confusion. Several miles, at night we form in line of battle & fortify we could hear the enemy fortifying in front of us all night 16th heavy cannonading all the forenoon & considerable fighting on our right & left our batteries shelling the rebs in our front at (9?) PM our lines advance (our brig left in reserve) & charge the enemy works & take nearly all their artilery & <underline>hundreds</underline> of prisoners many of which are without shoes
