to me as if they would pass over anything, several times I noticed loose boards lying on the bridges which they passed over easily for themselves not so for us. In one place a birch tree lay accross the road, the driver did not trouble himself to get down & take it away but merely drove over it. These drivers treat their horses very well & seldom use they whip they seem generally quiet & not talkative. The Hemlock is one of the most beautiful trees in the woods here the other trees are birch, white pines, spruce, white poplar, sugar maple &c & these are mixed together in great variety. The effect of the fires on the forests is red-oak is another tree
