Camp. 4 Iowa Cavalry Clear Creek Miss Jan..24th 1864 Dear Father When I wrote to you last I expected soon to start home, but we have been some what disappointed in our [expections?] the Regiment Re-enlisted on the understanding that we will go home as soon as we enlisted but you Know theise military promises are very uncertain, we will have to do a little more fighting before we start home I guess, Genl. McPherson is now makeing preperations to take Jackson again, and you Know it will be impossible for this army to make a moove and not have the 4' Iowa Cavalry for Advance Guard, we have led the advance on that Rebel Town twice and are just the boys for the third time, The Genl. assures us that we will get to go home as soon as the expedition is over which will be about twenty day from the time we start. We will probly start the first of next month I dont think there will be any very hard fighting. there is only reported to be one Division of ten thousand troops in that part of Miss, there will be a large Command go from here perhapse twenty five thousand men, I think the idea is to establish a post in Jackson this time and hold it
