Mrs. Stewart S. Foster Route 2, Box 69 Hamburg, Iowa Helena Ark Aug 17th 1862 Dear Father This beautiful Sabath evening, I set me down to dop you a few lines Asahel received a letter from you to day which gave us pleasure to hear that you was all well on the 7th your letter states that you had not heard from us only through the news papers since the 12th of June. I think there must be some mistake. I have written a number of letters since then we are still here in Camp, and all the good that I can see that we are doing the goverment is eating up a large amount of provisions, uncle Sam provides us plenty of the necessarys of life, and we can procure some of luxerys of life, by paying the rebbles an exorbitant price for them. I am tired and sick of the way the war is Carried and it dos seem to us that the object is not to end the war but on the Contrary to protract it as long as possible, and if a more energetick course is not soon taken I greatly fear the effect on our soldiery,, they are becoming restless they want to move forward on the enimy
