Mrs. Stewart S. Foster Route 2, Box 69 Hamburg, Iowa 1863 Picket, Post June 20th Dear Father I this morning seat my self under the shade of a Beech tree to write you a few lines, we ar all well and in good health, we ar on picket about one mile from Camp we ar Campt 14 miles in the rear of vicksburg, there has been the heaviest firing going on this morning that I hav heard. Since the fight Commenced there is a constant roring of the cannons, we ar scouting evry day almost, I was out yesterday and day before scouting, day before yestery we went to afery on black river to see whether the rebles was making any peperation for Crossing ar not just as we started
