I havent had a letter from you and Sallie for a long time. a few days ago I lost all the letters I had received since we left Helena I lost my pen and this is such a poor one I can hardly write and I am in a great hurrah for we are under orders to march and I want to write a letter home. I want to hear from you and Sallie the worst kind. Milt has been writing lately he has given you all the important news my health is very good Milt is well too. I ran a very narrow escape in the fight we had some time a go as my horse fell with me just as the rebels charged upon us but I succeeded in getting him again. I feel very thankful to that kind and merciful Being that has protected and cared for me in all danger Asehel (Vertically, at lower right:-) I am determined to try to describe [much?] better the [removal?] of my dear [brother?] pray for me that I may be a good boy my love to you and Sallie
