JELLY WHIP. Dissolve one package of gelatin in a cup of cold water. Add to the two cups of sugar and one quart of boiling water. Divide the mixture into three parts, in one of which place marshmallows and white grapes, in the second one put pineapple and oranges and in the third nuts. Fill individual glasses with different mixtures and serve them with whipped cream. Decorate with preserved cherries, candied orange peel and nuts. OIL FOR FERNS. A tablespoonful of castor oil poured on the ground around the roots of palms and ferns once a month will give them a rapid growth and make them look fresh and green. If ants come into the kitchen and pantry put kerosene on the doorstep and edges of the shelves and they soon will leave. To remove the odor of paint from a room leave in it over night a pail of water with four or five sliced onions in it. Shut the room tight and in the morning the obnoxious odor will be gone. TO MAKE BROWN SHOES BLACK Dissolve a lump of washing soda about the size of a walnut in 1/2 cup of boiling water. Let it cool and rub the shoes thoroughly with the liquid. Then, while still moist, apply two coats of black shoe dye. When quite dry the shoes will take a lovely black polish.
