23" Our works are very strong and need be for we can see a huge fort 1 1/4 miles from here, its rows of guns frowning upon us, & 9A M. we saw three lines of the enemy more towards us and every preparation was made to receive them. Their [wild?] yells, as they were harangued by their officers, could be heard by us, and in a short time their artillery opened upon us as they at the same time driving the skirmish line of the 1st Div in to their works.
