Davenport, March 14th, 1860 Thomas C Durant, Esq New York Dear Sir, The amount of Taxes for 1859 [on?] the Joint [ajc?] Lands Jno [C?] Sargent included in your purchase of C & S, is as follows: 957 21/100 acres in Johnson Co ... $ 60.45 1.760 " " Iowa Co ... 99.42 2.262 87/100 " " Powesheck Co ... 138.16 } $ 298.03 due 15 Jany 1860 and bearing interest at 25% per annum from that date I send this, supposing you may need it in your settlement with John C. The "repudiation" movement, recently agitated by the "Democrat", meets with little favor, and the authorities will probably strain a nerve to pay the interest on our bonds. -- I presume Mr Farnam is in N.Y. ere this with the accounts drawn off from F & D's books here. The settlements with C. & S's creditors do not progress much. Yours truly Jno L. Coffin
