of Rock taken off from the Cut - so as to have the avails of it themselves, and may have alterd it somewhat from the estimate so as to better disguise it - but the amount or value is about the same as that kept off from us - solid Rock measurement, for Borrowd material, (earth) to put into that fill - You see the point perhaps Now after our interview and getting a line from you to Mr Gillis - we demanded this 2nd estimate he gave us the first and the last and said that was all - on visiting Mr Millers Head Quarters and talking with his Book Keeper Mr Alexander Miller he told us that he was aware that we had not Received all our Credit for the Cut and spoke of this 2nd estimate I asked him to let me see it but he said Mr Patterson had carried it off in his Pocket to the City - remarking that Patterson was a curious kind of a man - advised me to wait until he returned and demand to see it, he thought he would be obliged to put it to our Credit - but you see they have the engineer to help them in the matter just as I anticipated when we took the line from you - he should be as you said an umpire between the workmen and Contractors & sub contractors but he is not - he is interested in some way in the matter - to our injury and disadvantage our total Cr. for the Cut according to their figures is 315 yds earth 30 " Loos Rock 7659 " Solid Do While according to their Bill renderd against the Company (provided they have no other Cr than the amt. located on the Cut) is only 7288 solid Rock - is not this
