Iowa City June 28, 65 Thos. C. Durant Esq Dear Sir With regard to Poweshiek & Iowa Co. bonds, we tried a case against each county at the late federal term of Court & got verdict in each case upon the coupons. Motions were filed in each case for new trial & as the judge was about leaving, he did not then decide them We have no doubt however the motions will be denied & that we shall have judgment. All the counties are getting up injunctions in the state courts & Judge Miller holds such injunctions to be good defence to Mandamus The U.S. Sup. Ct. will, no doubt, overrule this at the Decr term, and those who in the mean time get their judgements can then promptly proceed with Mandamus to compel a levy of tax. In regard to Muscatine Co we find no serious trouble in getting judgment as that County relies solely upon the state injunction, & we think nearly all the counties expecting to defeat the Mandamus after judgment will make less fight, against the attaining of judgt. In case you conclude to obtain judgt against Poweshiek Co. it will only be necessary to send the Coupons & our bonds Yours truly Edmonds & Ransom
