N. Y. August 13, 1862 T. C. Durant Esq. You are aware the $8000 mortgage is due in a few days on the Staten Island place, & Mr Crane when I saw him intimated you would probably not protect it. However, to make it an object to do so, I will state that I am using all my means at present in delivering arms under a Contract with Secy Stanton now in full operation, & being notified by the War Dept. that we may exceed the Contract, we are, in addition to some $50,000 outlay in machinery &c enabling us to deliver 70 per day, are arranging for an additional outlay to make up to double or treble that number daily. If, next week, you will pay off that mortgage & interest - I will allow you an interest in my contract guaranteed at 25 cents per gun on 10.000 guns within one year, payable out of each lot as delivered to & paid for by the Govt. Can you make $2500 in any other way, by simply paying your own
