local interest or state policy, but, let us all rather unite to make them available for your company - for ours & for the great Union & Pacific road, by giving to the public the shortest line, that can be soonest constructed - at the least cost, & operated with most economy, & pay the proprietors the best revenue, all upon some fair basis, similar to that agreed to between us last winter. We must I know, arrange some plan for accomodating the City of Desmoines, & also Omaha, but let us first secure a road to that common point on the Platt river where all the lines must be blended into one, & prosecute that with all our united energies, & bring up all other & less important connections as our respective interests & ability will permit. I think therefore, that our Cedar Rapids line, must be substantially maintained, but not with a view to monopoly but under such fair arrangements with your co. as will make you participators in its advantages. On such a basis, I should advocate
