intervals very acute pain. Having heretofore had some [other?] difficulty with the "kidneys" the danger apprehended was that this present trouble being so near the same place might assume that form & became something serious. But for that he would be up and at work today but his physician charges him especially to keep perfectly still and flat on his back a little longer & says by so doing he will be all right. I write this chiefly at his request and my judgement is, after spending an hour with him this afternoon, that by Monday morning he will be able to go at the work you wish done. Should it be otherwise I will notify you at once by telegraph. He seems to be excessively annoyed at his present condition and the present circumstances. In haste C.H.B. CH Ballard Nov 29th 1872
