Mourae Mine Union County N.C. Nov 16th 1855. T.C. Durant Esq No.3 South St. New York. Dr Sir Our work here is going well as usual, in a satisfactory manner. The vein in the South End had increased in size since the date of my last, from 4 inches to 1 foot. It carries some "sulphur ore", lead, blende, & copper. It gives strong indications of the proximity of a [bunch?], We have a great deal of water to contend with, & hard ground, but notwithstanding these difficulties the work is progressing rapidly, for the number of miners employed. We have fortunately no sickness at this mine, & all hands keep well & healthy with the exception of Capt. Diefenbach who met with an accident last week, which has laid him up for a day or two.
