Marrion Mine Union County NC Dec 3rd/54. Dear Brother, The Dam fixings have gone rather slow this week, the higher get it up the Slower the work goes on, and then we have had three very cold Days the past week and I could not get more than half the work out of my men. I have been working fourteen men and two teams the last week. The Dam is now out of Danger in case of a freshet about next Wensday we shall commence putting down the spillway and [airting?] it with one gang of men, and commence working on the Race with another gang. There is one good weeks work on the race Every thing is very much out of order, there will have to be a new wheel, new [Firebay?] at the mill and one at the Dam. The wheel will be 11 or 11 1/2 feet over shot, so you can judge about what machinery can be used. I have not seen any thing of Mr Williams yet or the carpenter Most of the men that I am working I hire by the day (from 62 1/2 cents to 75) per day and they board themselves, I shall want some more money as soon as you can get it to me. I am looking for letters every day.
