Monroe Mine, Union County N.C. Dec 24 [1854?] Thos C Durant Esq No 7 South St New York City Dear sir, We have got along very well the last week, Capt D__s German miners have not come but will be here the first of the month. He has been seeking the same men that I had when he came. Uncle will continue to [do?] so untill the miners come, I was at the mine last eve, the men all promised to commence work again on Teusday morning but I do not expect it, they will all get drunk on Monday and most likely keep drunk untill after New Years. The rock on the west side of the shaft is getting softer and of a redish colour I think that we shall soon be down to the vein. I shall be able to get Lumber this week at the steam mill about two miles from the mine, a mill that has been put lately. We can use about 5000 feet at this time. Pay day comes on the first of the month and no Money Yours with respect Wm F Durant, Supt
