Union County N C Dec 28th 1854 Dear Brother Yours of the 13th containing a certificate of deposit for five hundred dollars came to hand to day, being on the road 14 days, I was glad to rec it as pay day at the Monroe Mine comes on Monday next. I shall also make pay day come on the first of the month at the Marrion Mine, it has been [impossible?] for me to have a regular pay day at the Marion Mine untill now as there has been a regular coming and going of the hands by the day. For the next month (January) I shall want about $250 at each mine. I wrote to you in my last letter (which was mailde yesterday) all that had been done at both mines durring the last week, and that I did not expect to get any more work done untill after the New Year, but I was up to the Monroe Mine Teusday morning after Christmas and found the hands all at work at the regular shifts (and all sober) The two German Miners will be here on Sunday ready to commence work on the 2th; I pay them $35 per month the Mining Smith $30 (he is now at work in the shaft and is a good miner) Three good
