United States Internal Revenue, Deputy Collector's Office, 1st district, Iowa, Columbus City, May 7, 1870 Rev. Joseph A. Dugdale, Mt. Pleasant. Your esteemed favor of the 20th ultimo has been received. My absence from the convention you propose would perhaps be inconsistent with the appearance of my name to a call for it. I shall probably be unable, from other engagements, to attend on the days named, otherwise my name could be used with pleasure on my part for I heartily endorse and wish Godspeed to any movement designed to promote the cause of woman suffrage. I wish I could say as much for my good wife - She illustrates her ability to take part in the affairs of government by differing with me on the question. In regard to the other aspect mentioned in your letter I have merely this to say: International congresses are doubtless capable of accomplishing much good in the interest of peace and civilization generally, in as much as they serve to make people of different nationalities better acquainted with
