Public opinion is admitted to be powerful, but is it not sometimes usefully questioned and enforced in the right direction by the sword: - Examples will readily occur to the mind: How many decrees of how many congresses would it have required to effect the abolition of slavery in the United States? It would seem that nothing but the desolation of war, was adequate to that. But still I would not discourage by word or deed your good works. I have faith in the progress of humanity - and in that good time coming when there shall be no more war - I am with much esteem Yours Truly Francis Springer
