Independence, Iowa, June 14, 1870. Mr. Joseph A. Dugdale, Dear Sir:- Although I find it impossible to be present with the convention called at Mt. Pleasant for the 16th inst., I still wish to express my hearty concurrence with every proper effort toward the organization of the friends of equal rights in our State. The fact that the contending forces in this conflict are not to meet in pitched battle for two years, ought not to blind our eyes to the necessity for preliminary work.
