There is a good deal of sickness in this neighborhood mostly throat complaints amongst children - They give quinine. wrap in flannel put kerosine & flannel on the neck, swab with alum - they encourage vomiting - but do not allow physie. The patient is kept warm - Some think it is Diptheria - I think it is tonsilitis or Quinsy - I have been in families helping to do for them in their distress - The rain is pat-pat-pattering against the window at my left & as I look out I see the ground covered with snow the air dark with fog & rain - such weather is rather unusual for Jan'y yet I think it meets with a welcome almost everywhere. It not only gives water to those wanting water but puts moisture in the soil thereby raising the drooping spirits of the farmer as he thinks of his coming
