Medical Receipts ie Mr. W F Collected 1842 Vegetarian diet to begin with for a flesh eater. At breakfast & tea have 6 or 8 oz of whole meal bread cut thick with a scrape of butter on it - 4 to 6 oz of fresh fruit or any seasonable green stuff. At the end of the meal drink one large cup of cool and not too sweet cocoa, weak tea or coffee, or have 3 or 4 oz of oatmeal, crushed wheat, pearl barley, made into porridge with water. Eat it cool with whole meal bread but not milk sugar or salt. Dinner 5 days a week may consist of 3 or 4 oz of lean beef or mutton or boiled white fish, also potatoes baked or boiled in their skins and a green vegetable - afterwards plain milk or whole meal bread pudding or stewed, fresh or dried fruit and wholemeal bread. On Tuesday and Friday do without fish flesh or fowl and have Potatoes greens plain sauce and an egg or 3 or 4 ounces of macaroni boiled till soft eaten with stewed prunes or made into a pudding with eggs and milk or a vegetable stew made from carrot, turnip onion or other seasonable vegetable thickened with vermicelli or pearl barley, eat with wholemeal bread & stewed fruit & bread as second course. Drink lemon water or cocoa at supper time if thirsty. Weekly Times, Ecles Nov 12 1892 Its a good plan for bad cough & phlegm to take about 6 deep breaths before every meal.
