Omaha December 25th 1863 T.C. Durant Esq Dear Sir In your letter of the 12th inst. I find some enquiries with regard to ties which require an immediate answer - In the first place there are not men enough in this country that can be hired at any price to get out the ties you need as fast as they will be required - In the 2nd there is hardly enough Oak and other suitable timber between this and Fort Randall to supply what you need. I the 3rd there is a large amount of Cotton wood timber on the river within One hundred miles of this amply sufficient to supply the Road for a long distance - this timber will hold a spike nearly as well as Oak. Along the line of road between this and Ft. Kearney there is some Oak, Walnut, Coffee nut Red Elm and other woods suitable for
