C.C. Parry- Omaha N.T. May 9th 1864 P.A. Dey Esq Engineer U.P.R.R. Co Dear Sir In conversation with you a day or two since at this place I understood that it was the wish of the Union Pacific RR Co. to secure the services of a practical geologist and naturalist to accompany the different surveying parties, and ascertain the mineral and agricultural resources of the region along which the line of the Pacific RR is proposed to be located. Having spent several seasons in investigating the peculiar natural features of the Mountain region west of Denver City and having heretofore had considerable experience as a geological observer in connexion with different government surveys. I venture to offer my services in such a capacity to the Union Pacific RR Co. I have with me a first class mountain barometer intended for determination of levels, which has been compared with a standard Smithsonian Instrument in St. Louis, which can be used very satisfactorily in connexion with the different surveys in ascertaining the general level of the country, as well as determining the height of the different
