A second barometer heretofore used by me in determining the height of Pikes Peak, Berthouds Pass and many other points in that region is now in possession of Genl. F.M. Case and can be used in making stationary observations at some fixed point in the survey, by which the detached observations on the different routes can be made to give results with a great deal of accuracy Should the UPRR Co decline accepting my services in any definite capacity I would request the favor of being allowed to accompany the surveying party west of Denver, leaving it optional with the Co to secure the results of my observations by adequate compensation if thought of any value to the general work As evidence of my ability to undertake such a commission I would respectfully refer to the following gentlemen Prof John Forrey US. Assay Office NY. City. Prof. James Hale Abany NY. Prof L Agassiz Cambridge Mass Prof T F Baird Smithsonian Institute Washington DC John E Henry Esq Davenport Iowa I expect to reach Denver City on or near June 1st and in the mean time if you can ascertain the final decision of the Directors of the U.P.RR Co in regard
