Omaha November 17th 1864 T.C. Durant Esq Dear Sir Yours of the 9th instant is received, the line can not be run as directed without an escort of One hundred men - The part of the Republican Valley that you want explored is the camping ground of several Indian tribes very hostile. Gen Mitchel can not spare the force he considers neccessary for their own protection. Will run the line as soon as sufficient force can be spared to protect parties - Respectfully Yours Peter A. Dey
