Iowa City August 16th 1860 T.C. Durant Esq Dear Sir By the Report of the Register of the Iowa State Land office I find that of the grant to the Mississippi and Missouri Rail Road Company. The United States have certified to the State______________________ 352.711 School Lands relinquished in Iowa Co by Governor________ 2.442 Lands belonging to the Des Moine Grant decided to belong} to the Rail Road___I make 28,000 Acres Grinnell says} the Land Department at Washington returned 42,000} 28.000 Swamp Lands contested 61.290 Other lands not yet confirmed (say______________________ 30.000 Making a Total of _____________ Acres 474.443 Which I am inclined to think will not vary much from the no. of Acres that will be received from the grant should the swamp lands be allowed ___ This would require one hundred miles of Track to take the whole of it ___ The Distance from Davenport to Iowa City is ______________ 54.4 miles " " Iowa City to centre of Marengo Depot 30.5 _____________ 84.9 miles " " Marengo to centre of Sta West Line of Iowa Co. 12.6 " ______________ Total ____________________________________ 97.5 " From this point to Brooklin 7.8 ______________ 105.3 miles The Station on the west Line of Iowa County should be
