Omaha January 4th 1863 T.C. Durant Esq Dear Sir I was somewhat surprised at the contents of your Telegraph received late Saturday night. All the professional ambition that I ever had, pointed to no position to me as desirable as that of Engineer of this road. When your letters of the 13th and 14th of December were received I acquiesced in what I believed to be your calm conviction (against the preferences of personal friendship and your own wishes) that I had failed to meet the requirements of the place I occupied, although deeply regretting this I wrote you giving ample time for the company to make a selection, it being extremely disagreable for me to remain with the conciousness that I was holding temporarily a position that I had shown a marked want of ability to fill.
