Iowa City January 27th 1863 T.C. Durant Esq Dear Sir I send you profile and Estimate of the original survey from Grinnell to Des Moines. I ran a rough Line over a small portion of the proposed change about twelve miles. I can make if you wish an Approximate Estimate of this, the balance I have never surveyed not wishing to incur the expense - I have bestowed much time and thought upon the Line west of Grinnell as it is the most expensive on the Road and believe the changes I propose although they might lengthen distance some little would materially decrease the cost - If you have any idea of doing any work west of Grinnell and are willing to pay for the cost of a survey I will make it as far west as you wish. I am not able to advance the money it will cost, and wait three or four years for the pay. Respectfully Yours Peter A. Dey
