Washington Aug. 17 @ 1856 Dear Durant The [laud?] committee could not accomplish any thing last night - They got together this morning and to my utter surprise [illegible] [under took?] to sing in the "[illegible] Iowa" for a [grout?] - committee [illegible] to it, but before any mischief was done [Ashmau?] saw [illegible] and [illegible] him beautifully, the result being to [stike?] out & place things in status quo - The Bill then was agreed upon all O.K. & [Wallbridge?] [illegible] got the floor, but they [fugled?] him out of it by going into committee of the whole, the Minnesota rascals going for it of course, which together with traitors in our own camp laid as out - We now tell them that the
