Iowa City, Iowa, Oct. 28 1865 My dear sister: You must excuse me for writing so often, because I am in good situation for writing so soon as supper is over. Eating cold boiled beef and cabbage for supper goes well and naturally makes me very writative. I received your letter last evening dated Oct. 15, 18th & I was very glad to hear from you, and learn that you are well. My health is very good at present. The weather for the last two days has been very rainy to day the students have been carrying their umbrellas, or running , Well Ellen, I am being iniated into the rudiments of the German language it goes pretty tough , because the class had advanced some twenty lessons, but the Proff. is very kind to me by permitting me to translate the German Phrases with an open book. Ellen I been down to see Mr. Logans last saturday, They have a cozy little house where they room, they say it costs them about $ 10 per week. They get very well at the University because they try to im- prove themselves. I commence to like the University better every day, it is getting to be a regular habit to try to have the lessons well, then there is the case I have no necessity to fear. Ellen, Mr. Williams told me some three weeks ago the Lether Morris intended to came to school here this winter, and this evening he said he wished
