Russell - Kansas - Jan 20th 1879 My Dear Mother: Another letter from me to day - and hope it will find you well. Well, Mother taking every thing into consideration since our arrival here - we are getting along finely - Much better than I expected for such a short time - At this rate the ponies would soon be brought into good use here. But now I can hire a pony when called upon to go into the country. Had a call on yesterday to go out about ten miles - The banker's wife - Mrs. Ackerman invited Edna and I to dinner on Saturday - we had turkey. And a very nice time - quite a number have called upon us and by the number of acquaintainces I have made it does not seem possible that I have scarcely been here three weeks, And if the next three weeks will be as advantageous to us - I shall not complain. My health and strength now is remarkable - think I have gained at least five pounds within the last three weeks - at first at Abilene the alkaline water made me deathly sick We have splendid water here. But must go deeper.
