Hard Soap (Mrs. Vanbuskirk) 1 can (1 lb.) Babbitts potash or lye into 1qt cold water & stir with stick or spoon when the lye will dissolve immediately & become hot. Let it cool thoroughly. Take 6 lbs of fat or lard or tallow ([tried?] out & strained), 6 lbs after it is [tried?] out. melt it until lukewarm. then sift in 1/2 lb powdered borax and 5 cents worth oil Sassafrass. Then pour the cold lye in slowly stirring well until throughly mixed & drips from spoon like honey. continue stirring for 10 minutes. Let it stand in a cool place. After 6 hours or more ( before very hard) cut into cakes with a knife but let it remain in the pan 6 hours longer. When quite hard take out
