A Cement that will resist Fire and Water Take half a pint of milk mix it with the same quantity of vinegar so as to coagulate the milk Separate the curd from the whey and mix the rind with the white of four or five eggs beating them well together [illegible] (I am not sure whether it is the curd or the whey that is to be mixed with the eggs) Then add sifted quick lime sufficient to make a paste of the consistance of putty Let this be applied carefully and properly dried to broken bodies and fissures of any kind and it will resist both fire and water A Cure for Stinking Barrells Take the leaves of Wallnut tree a pail full Boil them strain the water from the leaves and put it into the [vessel?] Bung and [illegible] it In a quarter of an hour throw that away and put in the same quantity with half a pound of salt petre in it or put a beak of wood ashes to a barrel and hot water and roll about To make Shoes and Boots waterproof Take Drying oil (that is boiled linseed oil) one pint gallon [illegible] two ounces Turpentine two ounces Burgundy pitch one ounce Malt [t?]over a slow fire Then add a [full?e] drachm of essential oil of lavender or Thyme Let the shoes be rubbed with a brush either in the sun or by a slow fire brush it once in and then apply more untill the leather is quite saturated To make Jet Blacking such as is fit for [illegible] Take one Drachm of Indigo a quarter of an ounce of [illegible] Half ounce of black soap Four ounces of glue One pennyworth of mashings of Logwood and one quart of vinegar Boil the whole over a slow fire untill it is reduced to one pint A small quantity is then to be taken on a piece of clean sponge and thinly applied to [illegible] or to Shoes and Boots Dry Salted Hams Excellent To every 20 lb of Ham, add the following 1 lb salt 1 oz pepper 1 oz salt petre Rub the Ham well with molasses then apply the above 1 a week for 3 weeks
