-8- 4,28,1912. At Home. To my dear friend Ida R. Chamness, Yes Ida, when I read in thy last letter to me of how near thou had been to the grave, O, O, so thankful I am that thou art raised again; and no doubt thy life will be spared and prolonged for further service for the Master in the white and foreign field. He will send thee in His own time to gather the lost people that are now scattered to the four winds of the world back to God. Ida I have felt to write thee as it comes so unexpectedly to me. The purest gold has to be tried over and over. And the most able ministers in the church must be proven to be true. Joel. Joel Johnson had obtained a minute in 1911 from North Carolina Meeting of conservative friends for religious labors in Europe (and the British Isles). Solomon Barker was forcing himself to be his companion on this visit. And he made a statement in the select body (I being present) that cut Joel to the heart. Joel could not possibly accept him as a companion in such a weighty concern. Some wanted him to put off going to Europe in 1912 as planned, but he felt to go quickly. So he started on the trip in fifth month, 1912. I had been very sick all of that winter, nigh unto death. I had felt a concern to go to Norway in time for their yearly meeting. And I kept Mary Stokes informed; as she intended to go with me, but had written me to put it off to another year. Joel Johnson also had written to the same effect. But the command came for me to go
