The church is far behind to-day, and largely in the wilderness when we consider Europe in her barbarism etc. Ida, many many thanks ascends to the kind heavenly Father from my heart; - and to thee too for opening the way for me to visit the people in Europe; in the love of the gospel, that had lain lively upon my mind for over twenty years. Seeing now there was such a furry and storm of the Devil, and his works, so near us we were on the brink of destruction. And were permitted, and favored from on high to acomplish our mission for the heaven-ly Master, is wonderful to me. Ida, thou was the fore most one, and highly favored in that missionary journey. Thy work, I know was far ahead of us. So thou sees clearly that thou was the chosen instrument that the Lord alone, prepared for my deliverance out of the confusion of the Enemy of all good; that was raging high in North Carolina and Philadelphia. O my feelings to stay away from Philadelphia, followed by a dream: we arrived at a deep lake of furious running water with a rotten bridge over it; there we turned and went another way.
