- 7 - to weep over the great kindness of all, and the way being so wonderfully opened for us who felt ourselves so weak; and not knowing if we would be received anywhere or not. And even the ocean was remarkably calm for the time of year. Mamma felt inclined to hold a meeting on board, but thru backwardness let it go by, for which neglect we felt much regret afterwards. The day we landed the deck stewart 'Percy' took great pains in wheeling my chair from side to side of the boat telling about the pretty scenery which we were passing up the English Channel and river 'Itchten'. I saw preparations which had been made during the war, to keep the enemies out, the large hospital where the soldiers were taken, Queen Victoria's Castle on the Isle of Wite and the beautiful hill roads and trees, a grand sight! Our boat 'Olympic' also stopped one hour at Cherberg, France where a much smaller steam boat came up close to ours and a dock bridge was extended from one of the decks to the small boat for the passengers to cross over on. About two thirds of the people landed here, so our company seemed small the rest of the day.
