- 8 - It was interesting to see the neat trim green fields of France; and see their trains rushing along, but sad to remember that here our soldiers came during the great war. Here the Sea Gulls surrounded our boat in great numbers, not ceasing to make their squeaky calls; and darting down onto the water to pick up bits of food thrown from the ship. I noticed as they soared round and round they kept on turning their heads swiftly from side to side, while the rest of their body seemed almost motionless. It was very touching to us to leave the boat and part with the crew who had been so kind to us and shown so much sympathy all the way. We were sorry that we had not had the use of my camera, so mamma asked a man to snap a photo of we three on deck, which he did and would receive no pay. He sent them to us after he had returned to his home in southern Africa.
