Liberty Union County Indiana April 23rd 1861 This day I enlisted in a company of volunteers under command of Cap T. W. Bennett. Remained at home and drilled until May 6th. Went to Indianapolis and commenced Soldiers life in Camp Morton. Remained there until the 11th and then went to Camp Wayne at Richmond Ind. I was appointed Orderly Sergeant of our Company. May 14th was enrolled in the 16th Ind. Regiment under Col. Pleasant A. Hackalman
