[illegible] went 7 miles and it becoming too dark for our purpose we crowded into the bushes, cal [illeg] supper of hard crackers and lay down without blankets. Sep. 2nd Up 4 o'clock & we march wearied and nearly froze, being unable to sleep for cold. Started on up the valley in search of Secesh and finidng none (except one who was laying in a drift pile nearly decayed he haveing been drowned some days before and washed there). Started on our return to camp 11 miles before breakfast. Took it easy the remainder of the day. Weather clear and Warm. Sept 3rd remained in Camp until 5 Oclock P.M. our company was ordered posted on advance picket up Elk Fork.
