Feb 17. Weather warm & pleasant. Received the news in camp of the surrender of the Rebels at Fort Donelson which caused great enthusiasm in camp. All are now hopeful that the end of the war is not far distant. We received orders last night to be ready to march at 8 Oclock tomorrow morning. Feb 18 Weather turned cold last night. Some Snow on the ground this morning. Owing to the inclemency of the weather postponed marching for another day. Feb 19th. Raining hard all day. They brought a flat boat here
