July 4th 83 No meeting. July 11th 18/83 The Club met with Mrs Alexander and were glad to count once more among their number Mrs Marshall and Mrs Carson, whose seats have long been vacant. The Sec'y being absent the minutes were not est and Mrs Latham was appointed Sec pro tem, Mrs [?] critic and Mrs Latham [&?] Alexander program com. The order of the day was miscellany, and our President read an excellent article which ought to be placed on record as part and parcel of the permanent doings of the Club. It was, in brief, history of the Club from the date of beginning, the changes and improvements, with a touching reference to the shadows that have dimmed its pathway of so many of its members. Mrs Cook's article demonstrated the fact that country boys and girls are the ones who climb highest on the ladder of fame and worldly honors, and announced the still more important assertion that no city born & bred individuals ever yet filled the presidential chair. She also added the statement the sunny south has furnished no prominent individuals in literature or art. Mrs [?]
