33 Jan. 28, 1886. The Club met with Mrs. Hindman, six members present. The sec. being among the absent ones, no minutes were read. The subject for the meeting was a new one to the club, also one full of interest. Several essays were prepared. Mrs. Rathbun having one on Venus. It was an instructive and elaborate affair. She also offered an apology for not having done more toward making it interesting. But had it been more so, it would have been beyond the comprehension of our feeble minds. Mrs. Latham read a poem on the moon which was as mystical as that majestic orb itself. Miss Durham read a poem on Venus Mrs. Hindman read an essay on the mythological history of the moon & Venus It was enjoyed by all, we had through her kindness the pleasure of gazing on a picture of Venus, seated on a tortoise. She managed it very gracefully considering it was such an uncomfortable seat. But she did not come up to the Cary ladies stadard for grace and beauty. Our pres. then read an essay which being the last (the essay) was by no means the least. It showed study and careful preparation.
