[end clipping] [clipping] The October meeting of the Women's Christian Temperance Union was held Wednesday evening at the North Side Friends church, with Rev. and Mrs. J. R. Bartow as host and hostess. After the covered dish supper which was held in the parsonage, the meeting was continued in the auditorium, the president, Mrs. A. W. McBlain, presiding. Devotions were led by Rev. McBlain, who told the Bible story of a father who brought up his sons so well that even the third generation were total abstainers from fermented drink. Mrs. McBlain gave some of the highlights of the convention that was held in Philadelphia commemorating the 75th anniversary or the WCTU. The local WCTU contributed $75 to the Diamond Jubilee Fund. She also gave statistics on the year's net gain of membership of the temperance organizations throughout the U.S., the WCTU, the LTL, and the YTC. Four children, members of the LTL, winners of speech contests, gave their recitations. They were Joyce Wiley, Darlene McDonald, John Saville, and Karen Harbison, who had been trained by Mrs. Ralph Allen. Mrs. McBlain then introduced the principal speaker of the evening, Rev. Mrs. Athena Mortimer, pastor of the Oak Grove church, who reviewed the WCTU study book for this year, of which the title is, "It's Smarter NOT to Drink," a brief medical discussion for use in schools and colleges. Rev. W. J. Stewart exhibited a striking piece of visual education showing how a subtle influence may be unthinkingly brought into a home. This was a long roll made by pasting together liquor ads clipped from one issue of one magazine. After that he displayed a copy of each of three publications in which he could find no liquor ads, the New York Times, the Des Moines Sunday Register, and the Grinnell Herald-Register. [end clipping] [clipping] * * * The Women's Christian Temperance Union met Tuesday in the home of Mrs. George C. Murray, with Mrs. Earle Kennedy as hostess. Mrs. Ralph Allen was the program leader and reported on the Diamond Jubilee convention held in Fairfield in October. Mrs. A. B. Manson read the devotions and Mrs. A. W. McBlain presided. * * * [end clipping] Nov. '49 [clipping] * * * The December meeting of the Woman's Christian Temperance Union was held with Mrs. A. B. Manson. The devotional leader was Mrs. Sylvia Sparks, who developed the theme that God had honored womanhood by allowing Mary to be known as the mother of the Christ Child. The program leader was mrs. Theodore Olson who presented the lesson on the assigned topic. "The Christian's Responsibility to the Foreign Born." Signatures were affixed to a petition asking for legislation prohibiting inter-state advertising of liquor and beer. * * * [end clipping] [clipping] NOVEMBER 28, 1949 Ed Bohstedt Sells Centers Ed Bohstedt, who established and has been operating the West and South Side Service Centers on Sixth avenue and south West street respectively has sold the businesses and stock and has leased the buildings. Harlan Cratty and Frank Bouma have taken over the West Side center and the South Side center will be operated by Mr. and Mrs. Edward Cox. Mr. Bohstedt's ice business will also go with the South Side center. Mrs. Cox and Mr. Bouma have been in the employ of Mr. Bohstedt and are familiar with the details of the business. Both centers are flourishing. Mr. Bohstedt retains the two apartments on the second floor of the South Side Center and will finish them and lease them separately. The West Side center has been operating for a year and the South Side center was opened for business June 10. Mr. Bohstedt built both buildings and also erected a new warehouse for his ice business. Mr. Bohstedt states that his present ambition is to take it easy for a time and to finish up various odds and ends. His future plans are undetermined. He has been working hard on the two projects and feels that he is entitled to a good rest. [end clipping]
